Oh Baby! How to choose skincare that's safe for moms-to-be

Oh Baby! How to choose skincare that's safe for moms-to-be
You think it will be nine (or ten) months of bliss: compliments about your pregnancy glow at the grocery store, belly-snugging dresses that let you show off your bump and gentle, early morning Hi mom! kicks from the tiny feet of your little one on the way. The truth is, for many mamas-to-be, it’s nine months of a hormonal rollercoaster that can take its toll on your skin, emotions and energy.

Since there is already so much on your mind, at Om Organics, we wanted to make one part of your pregnancy a little easier with natural, non-toxic skincare that’s safe and even beneficial.

So, when it comes to finding skincare safe for use while pregnant, what should you be mindful of and why does it matter so much? Which Om Organics products are most popular with our new mamas?

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CHOOSE SKINCARE CAREFULLY WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT

This is important: Remember that your skin is an organ, and it absorbs everything put on it—and if your body is absorbing a skincare product, your baby’s body is also absorbing it.

Now, most over-the-counter skincare products are safe for use during pregnancy, but there are some products that contain certain harmful ingredients which should be avoided at all costs.

Here are some of the specific ingredients and products to look out for:

  • Phalates. Often used in perfumes and body lotions and body butters with chemical fragrances, phalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals. Natural fragrances derived from essential oils let you safely enjoy uplifting scents.

  • Oxybenzone and its derivates. Many non-natural sunscreens contain oxybenzones to act as a UV filter, but this too is a hormone-disrupting chemical that can cause permanent damage to both mom and baby. For a safer option, stick with mineral-based sunscreens.

  • Retinoids, acutane and high dose salicylic acid. These are common ingredients in products designed to treat severe acne, but these are also hormone-disrupting chemicals that you’ll want to avoid during pregnancy

OM ORGANICS SKINCARE AND PREGNANCY: COMMON QUESTIONS AND POPULAR PRODUCTS

Is vitamin C and hyaluronic acid safe during pregnancy?

We’ve been asked this one a few times so we wanted to reassure you that yes, both vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are safe during pregnancy. In fact, they’ll do wonders to help nourish your skin during this special time.

  • Vitamin C is naturally occurring and acts as a terrific antioxidant during pregnancy.
  • Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that’s already in your skin, and its job is to encourage our skin to attract and retain moisture: a great helper for pregnant women experiencing dry, depleted skin.

TRY: COCONUT DEW HYALURONIC MOISTURE CREAM

What face moisturizer can I use while pregnant?

When it comes to your face moisturizer, the simpler the ingredients, the better.

We often recommend to customers who are pregnant to consider a face serum or high quality face oil over a low quality cream so you have actually have a safer, more effective and stable moisturizer on your side.

What you don’t want is a cream or oil with an emulsifier preservative or one that’s comedogenic (pore-clogging) that will actually cause or worsen breakouts. The key is a light and simple, natural formula.

TRY: ROSEHIP AND BLACK CUMIN PERFECTING FACE OIL
Rosehip is fantastic at promoting even skin tone and it’s very light as well as non-comedogenic—helping you to achieve that six-months-along glow you’d imagined. Another reason our moms-to-be love our perfecting oil is that it’s a natural skin lightener that gently tackles darkening of the skin that can occur during pregnancy.

How can I safely treat stretch marks during pregnancy?

We hear from a lot of moms who want to take preventative action against stretch marks, but they also want to avoid products that could be harmful to baby.

Our solution is organic body oil. As effective as it is safe, a plant-based body oil gives you extreme, super absorbant moisture as well as lovely natural fragrances. Also great on baby’s delicate skin once he or she makes an appearance.

TRY: CLARITY PURIFYING CONCENTRATE
With key ingredients such as blue tansy, black cumin seed oil and rosehip oil that naturally lighten the skin and improve the look of pores, here is your stretch mark superstar.
