It’s hard to believe when you see those floppy ears and those sweet, gentle eyes beaming at you, that anyone could do anything but love a beagle. Unfortunately, around the world, these precious dogs—and so many other animals—are abused in the name of lab research. Fortunately, the Beagle Freedom Project is rescuing and rehoming animals subject to cruelty, and giving them a chance at freedom.
Why is Om taking a bold stance against animal cruelty, and why have we vowed to become loud and passionate supporters of the Beagle Freedom Project (BFP)?
WHY THE WORLD NEEDS US ALL TO BE CRUELTY FREE
We believe skin is skin. That if a product can’t safely be tested on humans, it shouldn’t be tested on animals either. The list of mainstream American skincare brands that do not test on animals is growing, but there are still many companies that cage dogs for life and subject them to horrific cruelties as part of experimental research.
Here are some shocking numbers:
-Almost 1 million animals were held captive in labs or used in experiments (excluding mice, birds, agricultural animals and more) in the US in 2019 (source: PETA).
-3.9 million animals were used in experiments and more than 120,000 animals were subjected to “severe pain” in 2018 in Canada (source: PETA).
-More than 65,000 dogs are being used in animal testing right now in the US (source: BFP).
Why are so many of them beagles? Beagles make wonderful pets for the same reasons they’ve become the breed of choice for testing: Beagles are quiet and trusting. They are people-pleasers, quick to forgive. Even in the midst of being hurt, they probably won’t bite. They submit to life in a cage.

HOW THE BEAGLE FREEDOM PROJECT IS LEADING CHANGE

With patience, understanding and care, hundreds of BFP’s rescue dogs have become treasured four-legged family members.
Advocacy
To grow awareness about animal cruelty and help bring it to an end, BFP also focuses on several areas of education and advocacy. Some of BFP’s achievements include:
-Beagle Freedom Law mandating the adoption of dogs and cats from labs in several states
-Cruelty-Cutter app, a cruelty-free shopping software
-Lennon’s Law, which puts an end to dogs in California being held captive for years for animal blood banks
